Dear dad,

I was speaking to Ade yesterday about family, and how I feel my parents are immortal because death will never befall them. Dad sent me a copy of grandad’s eulogy last night and it’s sunken in somewhat, that it is inevitable. I never knew my grandad, but when I read the eulogy, I saw him in my dad. I can’t ask for the impossible, but all I can ask for is for people to see dad’s wonderful qualities in me. OMG I’m tearing as I type this, but my daddy to me, is Highlander, from the TV show he used to record every week to watch with me!

My dad has aged pretty okay (except for the gut; alcohol is evil) and I hope that gene is passed on to me :) Even if I say he doesn’t spoil me as much as other friends dads spoil them, even if he can be hard-headed and unreasonable, and I say he’s getting senile, I appreciate him in my own warped little way. So to my daddy, thank you for giving me the freedom to be me, the opportunity to make wrong decisions while you are around to bail me out. I’ll never say this to your face, but despite our disagreements, I think you’re an awesome dad. Oh and I’m glad that some of J’s quirkiness reminds me of yours, because that reminds me that you are really not Highlander, and you too, need to work on issues and I can’t expect you to be a perfect parent.
